QUESTION PERIOD - CANADA PENSION PLAN

Hon. Yonah Martin (Deputy Leader of the Opposition):Honourable senators, my question is also for the government leader. Across Canada, small businesses are suffering due to COVID‑related restrictions on their operations, including those in my province of British Columbia. TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GEORGE CHOW

Tribute to the late George Chow Honourable senators, what an honour to pay tribute to a remarkable Canadian and decorated war hero, the late George Chow, who passed away on November 6,  2020, one day after his ninety-ninth birthday. George joined the Canadian Army on August 27, 1940, just shy of his nineteenth birthday, and enlisted to serve in World War II. He did all this without his parents’ knowledge. Even at a young age, he felt the call of duty and, without hesitation, was ready to serve…

This proposal was announced on the same day as the commercial rent program changes and the wage subsidy extension, which were both in Bill C-9. Click here for more..…

QUESTION PERIOD - CANADA EMERGENCY RESPONSE BENEFIT

Hon. Yonah Martin (Deputy Leader of the Opposition):Honourable senators, my question for the government leader concerns letters self-employed Canadians recently received from the Canada Revenue Agency, telling them to repay their entire CERB payment by the end of the month, which is just a few weeks away. It seems the government has retroactively decided that the CERB qualification of $5,000 income in 2019 was, in fact, $5,000 net income. When former Finance Minister Morneau was here in March an…

QUESTION PERIOD - HUAWEI 5G TECHNOLOGY

Hon. Yonah Martin (Deputy Leader of the Opposition):Honourable senators, my question for the government leader is a follow-up to a question I asked a few weeks ago. In July, the U.K. government announced that British telecom carriers had to stop buying 5G equipment from Huawei at the end of this year and to remove Huawei kit from their infrastructure by 2027. Recently, the U.K. government has gone a step further, setting a deadline of September 2021 for carriers to stop any further installation…

TRIBUTE TO AMBROSE AND MATILDA CHOI Honourable senators, I rise to recognize a noteworthy Canadian family residing in Vancouver, B.C.: Won-Chul, Ambrose, Choi; his wife Min Jeong, Matilda, Kim; and their two sons, Hyun Sik, Eric, and Young Sik, Alex, Choi. Their immigrant story, from struggles and family separation to triumph and success, is one for the annals of Canadian history. It is a classic tale of young immigrant parents uprooting their lives to begin anew in Canada, and making sacrific…
