MAY 7 - FOUNDATION DONATES PPE (MASKS) TO BC VETERANS AND SENIORS IN CARE
Vancouver, BC – Senator Yonah Martin and MP Alice Wong joined Social Diversity for Children Foundation (SDC), a local B.C. non-profit organization, to deliver Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) face masks to veterans and seniors in assisted living and care homes. Recipients include George Derby Care Society/Derby Manor Independent Living, Amenida Seniors’ Community, The New Vista Society, Korean Senior Citizens Society and Korean Veterans Association Western Chapter.
APRIL 24 - REMEMBERING KAPYONG
Various Regions - The Honourable Yonah Martin, Grand Patron of Korea Veterans Association (KVA) of Canada (Heritage Unit) and Honorary Member of KVA Unit 7 (National Capital Region), in consultation and partnerships with Korean War Commemorative Committees (KWCC) across Canada and BC-based Korean War Commemorative Alliance (KWCA), launched a virtual #RememberingKapyong campaign, and prepared and distributed a commemorative package encouraging everyone to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong on April 24, 2020 11:00am (local time).
COVID-19 SUPPORT
Various Regions - In response to the needs of regional and national constituents, Senator Martin’s Office prepared comprehensive COVID-19 information packages about government programs and services; answered enquiries and intervened on files where needed; coordinated multiple virtual meetings and online events for various causes and purposes; and helped with delivery of PPEs to seniors, including veterans, in care or living independently. She also supported the launch of a “Meals on Wheels” program that delivers meals to veterans in B.C. on a weekly basis. The special program was initiated by nutritionist Ann Woo and generously supported by charitable organizations.
MARCH 9 - UBC ON THE HILL
Ottawa, ON - UBC President and Vice-Chancellor Santa J. Ono and Senator Yonah Martin, a UBC alumna organized a reception on the Hill with UBC alumni in Ottawa as well as with participants of this year's UBC’s Women in House Program. This year 10 outstanding students were selected from UBC to come to Ottawa and participate in the program which included a panel with female Ambassadors and High Commissioners and ended with a full day of shadowing a female Parliamentarian.
MARCH 6 - MOSAIC INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Vancouver, BC - Senator Martin brought greetings on behalf of the Senate of Canada to MOSAIC's International Women's Day celebration with members of the community.
FEBRUARY 26 - TEACHERS INSTITUTE ON CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY
Ottawa, ON – Senator Martin welcomed teachers from across Canada participating in the Teachers Institute on Canadian Parliamentary Democracy organized by the Library of Parliament. She attended a special dinner hosted by Senate Speaker, George Furey and House of Commons Speaker, Anthony Rota. Senator Martin moderated a panel of Senators in the Senate Chamber and participated in a roundtable discussion with BC teachers to share about the role and work of Senators.
FEBRUARY 21 - KOREAN WAR LEGACY PROJECT MOU SIGNING
Ottawa, ON - The Honourable Yonah Martin, Grand Patron of the Korea Veterans Association Heritage Unit, hosted a special Korean War Legacy Project MOU signing ceremony in the Senate Chamber on February 21, 2020. The ceremony was a historic moment and perfectly timed as June 25, 2020 begins the 70th anniversary of the Korean War years. The Honourable Jack Murta, Chair of the Korean War Veterans of Canada Foundation; Dr. Jongwoo Han, Chair of the Korean War Legacy Foundation; and Rachel Collishaw, President of Social Studies Educators Network of Canada, signed the MOU as a show of commitment and dedication to this important legacy project.
FEBRUARY 18 - 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CANADA-KOREA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT RECEPTION
Ottawa, ON - The Canada-Korea Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Canada-Korea Interparliamentary Friendship Group hosted a reception on the Hill in celebration of the 5th Anniversary of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement. The event was well attended by Parliamentarians, dignitaries, Korean War Veterans, public servants, stakeholders and community members. Special messages were delivered by Deputy Minister of Global Affairs, Mr. Jonathan Fried; His Excellency Maeng-ho Shin of the Republic of Korea; Senator Yonah Martin and MP Ali Ehsassi, Co-Chairs of the Canada-Korea Interparliamentary Friendship Group; and a special toast by The Hon. Ed Fast, former Minister of International Trade during the ratification of the CKFTA. On Feb. 19th, Senator Martin organized a CKFTA 5-year review roundtable discussion with various sector stakeholders, representatives from Global Affairs Canada, and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.
FEBRUARY 17 - OFFICIAL VISIT OF KOREAN MINISTER OF PATRIOTS AND VETERANS AFFAIRS MINISTER
Ottawa, ON – Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea visited Ottawa during his official tour of Canada to meet with Canadian Korean War veterans. The Minister hosted a dinner for local Korean War Veterans and dignitaries. Also in attendance were Ambassador Maeng-ho Shin, MP Nelly Shin and former Veterans Affairs Minister, Hon. Steven Blaney.
