Pro-Democracy Rally for Iran
The Iranian-Canadian Congress of B.C organized a rally in support of and in solidarity with the Iranian pro-democracy rallies. Senator Martin was pleased to speak at the event with North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton. Both Senator Martin and Andrew Saxton articulated that the Canadian government continues to support freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Iran and around the world and that the Iranian authorities chose to use brute force and intimidation in response to peaceful opposition is wholly unnaceptable.
12th Annual Korean War Veteran's Dinner
Senator Martin spoke at the 12th Annual Korean War Veteran's Dinner, hounouring the Canadian and Korean men and women who fought during the Korean War.
Vanspec (Vancouver Special Catechetical Program) Fundraising Concert
Vanspec is directed by the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence, a congregation founded in 1881, which came into the Vancouver Archdiocese in 1981.The Sisters at Vanspec offer Catholic catechetical instruction to children and adults who are challenged by intellectual or learning disabilities. There are special events throughout the year such as the annual Christmas party, Eucharistic celebrations, the yearly fundraiser dinner, special prayer and retreat days for instructors and parents. They also have a Parents’ Support Group. Senator Martin was pleased to support the fundraiser and listen to the beautiful music of the Kabok Orchestra.
Banting Middle School Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony 2009
Senator Martin returned to the school she taught at for many years in Coquitlam, Banting Middle School, to wish her former students all the best as they leave Banting and head into high school.

World Police and Fire Games Funding Announcement
The World Police and Fire Games are a spectacular international sporting event. The games offer police officers, firefighters, customs and correction officers from around the world an opportunity to showcase their athletic excellence in over 65 sporting events. And thanks to support from Canada’s Government, this summer will have the opportunity to take centre stage when our province hosts the 2009 World Police and Fire Games from July 31 to August 9. The Government of Canada is contributing almost $2.3 million toward the BC World Police and Fire Games. Senator Martin is proud that our Government supports initiatives like the World Police and Fire Games; it is initiatives like this that further develop our region and support our long-term economic success.

Senator Martin was invited to speak to a University of British Columbia Korean History class.
Coquitlam Library Re-Opening (Poirier Street Branch)
Coquitlam Public Library hosted a grand reopening party for its freshly renovated Poirier branch on Saturday, March 28, 2009. Senator Martin was on hand to make the funding announcement on behalf of the federal government. The library celebrated its transformation with a fantasy fiction party where Coquitlam residents came dressed as their favourite fantasy character. Poirier library patrons can now enjoy a new design that maximizes comfort and space usage. The building includes approximately 20% more public space, including reading and study areas, meeting rooms, a language learning room, a larger teen area, and computer stations. Its washrooms feature new water - and energy-saving features.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre Expansion Funding Announcement
The Fraser River Discovery Centre offers quality educational programming for the public to experience, including: school programs, speaker series, walking tours, special events/festivals, along with interesting and engaging exhibits, displays and videos of the Fraser River. It is a hands-on interpretive centre with the mandate of “Connecting communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser River”. The existing Preview Centre opened in 2001 with 5,000 square feet, and since then, the Fraser River Discovery Centre Society received $2 million from the provincial and federal governments through the Canada-B.C. Infrastructure Program to expand the existing centre to an impressive 17,000 square feet! The expansion will help the Centre continue providing consultation services on the economic and environmental sustainability of the Fraser River Basin, and additional educational and tourism services related to the river. Enhancements include new permanent displays, a state of the art theatre and an expanded gift shop. The expanded centre will help staff and volunteers spread excitement to the expected 50,000 people who will visit this year.
