National Unification Advisory Council - Western Chapter
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation the Honourable Jim Abbot along with Senator Martin were present at the National Unification Advisory Council – Western Chapter to discuss peace and unification of the Korean Peninsula. It was Senator Martin's pleasure, along with New Westminster Conservative Candidate Diana Dilworth and Jim Abbot, MP (Kootenay-Columbia), to present a letter from Prime Minister Stephen Harper to NUAC Western Chapter President Dr. Doo Ho Shin.
Marguerite Dixon Transition Society - Opening of Wenda's Place
Senator Martin was honoured to represent the Honourable Minister Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) at the opening of Wenda’s Place in Burnaby, BC. The Dixon Transition Society is a highly respected non-profit service provider who supports women seeking to re-establish their lives. With the opening of Wenda’s Place the Dixon Transition Society has increased their number of transitional housing units to a total of fourteen to better meet the needs of the women they serve. "This new development will provide women and their children with the supports they require to build healthy futures,” said Adele Wilson, executive director, Dixon Transition Society. "We will provide women with a safe and caring environment from which they can springboard into successful independent living and housing stability."
China Engineering and Technology Expo
Senator Martin was proud to bring greetings and represent the federal government at the opening of the China Engineering and Technology Expo. Senator Martin had the great opportunity to meet with the Chinese Vice-Minster of Commerce Chen Jian. This event was covered by China Central Television and other media from China and attended by 36 leading Chinese companies. The expo aims to showcase the strength and competitive advantage of the Chinese companies in such fields as infrastructure, communication, water power and mining and to provide a platform for them to explore the possibilities of cooperating with their potential Canadian partners under Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative.
Celebrity Tributes for Typhoon Victims
A fun and very successful fundraiser held at the River Rock Theatre, in Richmond, BC for the flooding victims in the Philippines. Performances included songs from ABBA, Tina Turner, and Michael Jackson.
SFU Foreword Dialogues
This event was hosted by the Simon Fraser University in conjunction with CrossRoads. Senator Martin presented the first "dialogue" and shared about life in politics and her past teaching career. It was a wonderful evening and Senator Martin had the opportunity to meet many talented young people with bright futures. This event was held at the SFU Harbour Centre, Downtown Vancouver.
Western Economic Diversification - SFU Funding Announcement
The WD–SFU Funding Announcement was attended by Senator Martin and Andrew Saxton, MP (North Vancouver) representing the federal government. The Government of Canada presented a funding announcement for SFU’s School of Contemporary Arts Campus to be located Downtown Vancouver, BC.
UBC Sauder School of Buisness Executive Mentorship Program Breakfast
As as alumni of the University of British Columbia, Senator Martin was honoured to be asked to mentor a UBC Sauder School of Business student.
60th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China
MPs Ed Fast (Abbotsford) and Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism) Alice Wong (Richmond) represented the Government of Canada and presented the Canada-China International Business Association President Jan Liang with a congratulatory letter from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. This event celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
Asian Adult Adoptees of British Columbia Inaugural Event
The Asian Adult Adoptees is a group of Korean adoptees adopted by North American families. This event celebrated the conjunction of the Korean and Canadian cultures.
