MARCH 20 – INAUGURAL UBC WOMEN IN HOUSE
Ottawa, ON - Senator Martin hosted 10 political science students from her alma mater, the University of British Columbia for a two-day event on Parliament Hill. The students toured the House of Commons and Senate Chamber followed by a panel discussion featuring MP Shannon Stubbs, two senior female political staffers and Senator Martin. An evening reception was organized for the students where they networked with female High Commissioners and Ambassadors, staffers, MPs, Senators, and other alumni. On their last day, the students shadowed parliamentarians to gain experience in the life of a politician.
MARCH 18 – KOREA PEACE NOW PARLIAMENTARY BREAKFAST
Ottawa, ON - Senator Martin co-hosted a parliamentary breakfast with Senator McPhedran and the Women, Peace and Security Network Canada to advocate for their campaign which promotes peace in the Korean peninsula. As the first and only parliamentarian of Korean descent, Senator Martin shared her personal experiences, insights, and analysis on the conflict and how the Canadian government can better engage its international counterparts and lead the discussions toward peace.
MARCH 16 – S.U.C.C.E.S.S. GALA
Vancouver, BC - Senator Martin attended the 2019 Bridge to SUCCESS Gala as an honoured guest. This year, the gala focused on raising funds for children and youth programs and social services. With over 800 guests in attendance, the event featured cultural festivities and a banquet dinner.
MARCH 16 – C3 CANADA KOREA SOCIETY LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Vancouver, BC - Senator Martin attended the 12th Annual C3 Leadership Conference, which featured three keynote speakers. All three speakers spoke about their respective experiences in overcoming professional barriers and celebrating their identities as Canadians of Asian descent. All students and recent graduates enjoyed a time of mentorship, networking, and career-focused workshops.
MARCH 8 – MEETINGS AT UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
Vancouver, BC - Senator Martin attended several meetings at the University of British Columbia in preparation for the Inaugural University of British Columbia (UBC) Women in House program taking place in Ottawa.
MARCH 3 – BULGARIA LIBERATION DAY FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
New Westminster, BC - Senator Martin joined the Bulgarian Canadian community of BC in raising the Bulgarian flag in celebration of Bulgaria Liberation Day.
MARCH 1 - SENATE 150 MEDAL CEREMONY
Toronto, ON - Senator Martin presented the Senate 150 Medal to Mr. Young Hyun Lee as Canada’s “unsung hero” in recognition for his contributions to the growth and development of the Korean Canadian community within Canada and overseas.
MARCH 1 - KCCA SAMIJEOL EVENT
Toronto, ON - Senator Martin attended the Korean Canadian Cultural Association’s Samijeol event to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Korea’s Independence from Japanese colonial rule. Senator Martin delivered remarks on behalf of the Senate of Canada and the Canada Korea Interparliamentary Friendship Group.
FEBRUARY 28 - 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF SAMILJEOL
Ottawa, ON - Senator Martin hosted the Korean War Commemorative Committee of Ottawa alongside several regional community leaders and stakeholders for its quarterly meeting in the new Senate of Canada building. Veteran Claude Charland’s 90th birthday and two wedding anniversaries were celebrated during lunch after the meeting. His Excellency Ambassador Maeng-ho Shin joined the group in the Senate chamber for Senator Martin’s statement about the 100th Anniversary of Samiljeol.
FEBRUARY 25 – THE SPECIAL SENATE COMMITTEE ON THE CHARITABLE SECTOR
Ottawa, ON - Senator Martin attended her first meeting for the Special Senate Committee on the Charitable Sector with the former Governor General, the Right Honourable David L. Johnston in attendance. The Committee discussed the impacts of federal and provincial legislation regulating charities, nonprofit organizations, and other similar groups.
