AUGUST 17 TO AUGUST 18 - 7TH GLOBAL KOREAN POLITICIANS FORUM
Burnaby, BC - The Honourable Yonah Martin, the first Canadian senator of Korean descent, attended the 7th Global Korean Politicians Forum (August 18 to 19, 2021), with the theme of Harmony with the world, peace on the Korean Peninsula. The Overseas Korea Foundation sponsored the biannual conference hosted by the Overseas Korean Politicians Council (OKPC) in-person in Jeju, Korea as well as virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. Senator Martin was acclaimed as Chair of the Overseas Korean Politicians Council (OKPC) for a 4-year term, succeeding Washington State Representative Cindy Ryu, who served an extended 6-year term.

JUNE 23 - BILATERAL INTERPARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP EVENT
OTTAWA, ON - The Canada Korea Interparliamentary Friendship Group (CKIFG) of the Canadian Parliament and the Korea Canada Parliamentary Friendship Association (KCPFA) of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, held a virtual bilateral meeting for the first of more to come.
MAY 2021 - MEETINGS AND EVENTS
Ottawa, ON - Senator Martin attended a special announcement with Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce, his caucus colleagues, and partnering community organizations on their anti-Asian racism educational initiative. Senator Martin also attended an informative and important discussion with TransLink Mayors council with BC Caucus and said farewell to Consul General Tae-In Chung as he completed his post as Consul General in Toronto. The Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying met for the first time this month. Senator Martin has been elected as Senate Joint Chair for this important committee that will be reviewing issues relating to palliative care in Canada, mature minors, advance requests and protection of Canadians with disabilities including mental illness.
MAY 19 - ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH
OTTAWA, ON - Senator Yonah Martin and Member of Parliament Nelly Shin, co-hosted a virtual Asian Heritage Month event with special guest, the Leader of Her Majesty’s Official Opposition, The Honourable Erin O’Toole and members of the national Korean Canadian community on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.
APRIL 2021 - SCHOOL VISITS
Senator Yonah Martin visited schools virtually across Canada to meet and answer questions from Canada’s future leaders. Senator Martin spoke about her work as a Senator, the parliamentary process and how Canada’s government works. She visited Bert Church High School (AB), Braemar Elementary School (BC), Capilano Elementary School (BC), Chatelech Secondary School (BC), Citadel Middle School (BC), Tamanawis Secondary School (BC), Princess Alexandra School (NWT), Hope Christian School (AB), and Westview Elementary School (BC).
APRIL 2021 - COMMUNITY OUTREACH
OTTAWA, ON - Senator Martin organized and attended various virtual events in BC and across Canada, including UBC Sauder School of Business Executive Mentorship Program’s (EMP) Finale Event, a roundtable on firearm’s legislation with MP Shannon Stubbs to hear concerns about Bill C-21, a webinar with Scouts Canada’s as a panelist on gender equality, and a virtual Vaisakhi celebration hosted by MP Tamara Jansen.
APRIL 24 - BATTLE OF KAPYONG 70TH ANNIVERSARY
OTTAWA, ON - April 22-25, 2021 was the 70th anniversary of the historic Battle of Kapyong (Gapyeong). In spite of eventual cancellation of the national ceremony, the 70th anniversary campaign included various acts of remembrance. On April 24th, the Office of the Honourable Yonah Martin held the National Virtual Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong (Gapyeong) to commemorate this important milestone in the history and deep-rooted friendship between Canada and Korea.
EMPOWERING WOMEN - DAUGHTERS OF THE VOTE, CAMPUS TOWN HALL
Senator Martin participated in various events during Women’s History Month (March), including Equal Voice's 2021 Daughters of the Vote, Women in Politics Campus Town Hall with university students from BC, Alberta, and Ontario, and a webinar by the Calgary Korean Women’s Association.
