Foreign Credentials Announcement
Along with Tung Chan, CEO of SUCCESS and Dave Hayer, MLA, Senator Martin was pleased to represent Minister Kenny, Citizenship and Immigration Canada) and Minister Finley (Human Resources and Skills Development Canada) by making this Foreign Credentials Recognition Announcement. The Government of Canada is working towards recognizing foreign credentials and to ensue that foreign qualifications are assumed and recognized in a timely manner and will enable newcomers to Canada to maximise their talents.
UBC Annual Fall Convocation
Senator Martin was asked to be a member of the Chancellor's Procession during the UBC Annual Fall Convocation. As a former teacher, Senator Martin places a high value on post secondary education and was pleased to accept the Chancellor's invitation. Congratulations to all the graduating students!
2009 Korea - Canada Energy Forum
2009 Korea-Canada Energy Forum was hosted by the Canadian Korean Embassy and the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum. Senator Martin discussed current mining practices in British Columbia and listened to ideas that focuses on new opportunities for Korean and Canadian companies in this market.
Canada Korea Forum 7
The Canada Korea Forum 7 was co-hosted by Asian Pacific Foundation of Canada and the Seoul Forum. Many topics were discussed Forum surrounding Canada–Korea relations, such as Canadian–Korean free trade and the Blue Sky Air Transport Agreement negotiated during the summer of 2009.
Banting Middle School Tour of the Richmond Oval
Senator Martin joined Banting Middle School, the school she taught at for many years before she was appointed to the Canadian Senate. Senator Martin enjoyed being part of the experience that allows students to experience the Richmond Olympic Oval. The tour was lead by the school counsellor, Tina Damelio and Bill McNulty a Richmond City Councillor also was present to interact with the students. Ms. Nancy Falcone's class was a pleasure to get to know and everyone had a wonderful time.
St. Pat's Gala Dinner and Auction
As an alum of St. Pat’s secondary school, it gave Senator Martin great pleasure to attend their Gala Dinner and auction fundraiser hosted in Vancouver, BC. It was a beautiful evening with a highlight performance from the school choir, who Senator Martin serves as an honourary patron. Senator Martin would like to congratulate Mr. Tony Arujo and the students in the choir on their talent and hard work in putting together an enchanting performance.
Richmond Oval Tour and Interview with KBS
Senator Martin was pleased to conduct another successful tour of the Richmond Oval and had the great honour of meeting Olympic Champion speed-skater Cindy Klassen. Senator Martin congradulates Cindy on her incredible hard work in pursuing and developing her natural talent. During this tour Senator Martin was interviewed by the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) as part of a documentary to promote the Olympic Games taking place in Vancouver in February 2010. This documentary will be aired in the Republic of Korea to create interest in the Olympic Games and to promote tourism in the beautiful city of Vancouver.
Multicultural Helping House Ground -breaking
Senator Martin attended the Multicultural Helping House Society ground-breaking ceremony with Parliamentary Secretary Alice Wong (Richmond) to announce the contribution of $500,000 on behalf of the federal government for the expansion of the facilities. Senator Martin was honoured to support this noble organization. The Multicultural Helping House Society (MHHS) is a registered non-profit society and charitable organization dedicated to helping newcomers succeed in Canada. The MHHS is committed to helping immigrants from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds by providing necessary educational, social, emotional, economic and other support services. They believe in empowering newcomers to become contributing members of Canada by providing orientation, training, job search and other services that will enable them to integrate into Canadian society. MHHS especially assists those who are disadvantaged due to language barriers, income or other circumstances beyond their control. They work in collaboration/partnership with other community organizations in British Columbia to meet the needs of clients.
YouthCan Lead Mentoring Session
YouthCan Lead is a mentorship program and part of C3 – Korean Canadian Society that primarily focuses on students in grades 8 to 12. Post-secondary students and young professionals serve as mentors who guide them in developing effective communication and leadership skills. The program operates on a semester basis, with meetings held every two weeks. This evening's mentorship program took place in New Westminster, BC.
SUCCESS Round-Table with Minister of HRSDC Diane Finley
During the SUCCESS round table with the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) discussed the Canadian recognition of foreign credentials and numerous other issues affecting new Canadians.
