JUNE 28 – 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HISTORIC PALDI SIKH TEMPLE
Vancouver Island, BC - Senator Martin joined the BC Sikh community and local residents to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the historic Paldi Sikh Temple, hosted by the Paldi Khalsa Diwan Society. The celebration was held over a course of three days which included a traditional flag raising ceremony, food and entertainment, and fireworks. Senator Martin presented remarks on behalf of The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Official Opposition.
JUNE 22 to 25 - 69TH ANNIVERSARY OF 6.25
Ottawa, ON - On June 22nd, Senator Martin in partnership with the Korean War Commemorative Committee (KWCC) and the generous support of Sae Eden Presbyterian Church (in Yongin, Korea) and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, coordinated a special ceremony in the Senate Chamber to honour Korea War Veterans on the occasion of the upcoming 66th anniversary of the Korea War Armistice. On June 23rd, Senator Martin joined the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Korea Veterans Association and Veterans Affairs Canada for a wreath laying ceremony at the Monument to the Canadian Fallen and a ceremony of remembrance at the National War Memorial. Vancouver, BC - On June 25th, Senator Martin attended a wreath-laying Observance at the Ambassador of Peace Korea War Memorial in Baby's Central Park along with CPC Candidate Jay Shin, Eunice Oh, Insoon Lee and Ed Sem. They then attended the commemorative ceremony at the official residence of the Consul General in Vancouver, followed by the annual lunch reception for Korea War Veterans hosted by Consul General Byung-Won Chung.
JUNE 13 - CKIFG 8TH ANNUAL CANADA-KOREA DIALOGUE SERIES
Ottawa, ON - On June 13th, 2019 the Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group (CKIFG) in partnership with the Canada Korea Society (CKS) held its 8th Annual Canada-Korea Dialogue Series on the Hill. The evening also included a dinner reception hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.
MAY 30 - BULGARIA DAY ON THE HILL
Ottawa, ON - The Canada-Bulgaria Interparliamentary Friendship Group (CBIFG) co-hosted the 2nd Annual Bulgaria Day on Parliament Hill with the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in partnership with the Bulgarian Community of the National Capital Region, to celebrate Bulgarian Education, Culture and Slavic Script Day.
MAY 21 – VISIT TO OSS ACADEMY
Ottawa, ON – Senator Martin visited students at the OSS Academy to present on her work as a parliamentarian.
MAY 17 – CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF KOREAN SCHOOLS
Ottawa, ON – Senator Martin invited teachers from the Canadian Association of Korean Schools (CAKS) to the Senate Chamber for a special presentation and for a tour of the Senate of Canada Building. In the evening, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea hosted Senator Martin and CAKS for a dinner reception.
MAY 11 – CLOVERDALE VETERANS APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
Surrey, BC - Senator Martin was invited by High Hold the Torch, a student-led organization, to be their keynote speaker for the Cloverdale Veterans Appreciation Luncheon. Senator Martin presented on her work with Korea War Veterans and the importance on remembering Canada’s role during the Korea War.
MAY 3 – OTTAWA KOREAN WAR COMMEMORATIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
Ottawa, ON – A special award ceremony was held inside the Senate Chamber to welcome three members of Senator Martin’s staff, Grace Seear (Chief-of-Staff), Kristin Doyle (Parliamentary Affairs Advisor), and Grace Lee (Executive Assistant) as honourary members of the KVA unit 7. Following the ceremony, a lunch reception was held where members of the Korean War Commemorative Committee discussed upcoming commemorative ceremonies.
MAY 1 – WEEK IN PHOTOS
Ottawa, ON – On May 1st, Senator Martin attended a lunch meeting with Ambassador Maeng-ho Shin, Embassy of the Republic of Korea and MP Jamie Schmale. On May 2nd, Senator Martin met with delegates from the Coalition of Municipalities for Energy Action and Canadian Association of the Deaf to discuss pertinent legislation before the Senate of Canada.
MAY - ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH
Ottawa, ON – On May 10th, Senator Martin co-hosted the Voices in Action Breakfast with the Asian Heritage Month Society and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Three distinguished panelists were invited to discuss their experiences on this year’s theme, Embracing Diversity, to students in grades 11 and 12. On May 14th, Senator Martin co-hosted a special screening of Justice Maryka Omatsu’s film, “Swimming Upstream” which highlights British Columbia’s Redress Campaign for Japanese Canadians. The screening was followed by a dialogue session with Justice Omatsu and Jordan Stanger-Ross, Project Director of Landscapes of Injustice. On May 31st, Senator Martin attended the Conference on the Human Rights Situation in Vietnam organized by Sen. Ngo as well as participate as a panelist at the Asian-Canadian Leaders in Public Service event organized by Global Affairs Canada.
