STATEMENT ON THE ELECTION OF PRESIDENT MOON, JAE-IN

“On May 10, 2017, President Moon, Jae-in, was officially sworn-in as the 19th President of the Republic of Korea. Prior to taking office, President Moon was the Opposition Leader of the Minjoo Party of Korea and former Presidential candidate in 2012. As a well-known human rights lawyer and respected Chief of Staff to the late President Roh, Moo Hyun, President Moon brings strong leadership and extensive experience to the Blue House.

“The inauguration of President Moon comes at a significant time for the Republic of Korea where experienced leadership and stability on the Korean Peninsula are important for the country and the world. As long-standing partners and allies, Canada and Korea share a deep friendship built on the bloodshed and sacrifice of the men and women who fought shoulder to shoulder during the Korean War. 2018 will be a historic year as Korea hosts the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, marks the 55th anniversary of Canada Korea diplomatic relations, and commemorates the 65th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.
