TRIBUTE: SEN. DAVID SMITH

Honourable Senators,

I wish to add my sincere best wishes to our colleague and my “Seoul” brother David Smith, who ends his notable career on Parliament Hill after more than three decades of service and political activism.

Among his long list of achievements, there is one that stands out - that through his relentless advocacy, notably includes protection of people with physical disabilities in Section 15 (1) of the Charter: “Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.” We will also hear more in today’s tributes and later this evening at a special retirement dinner which Art Eggleton and I are co-hosting.
