STATEMENT ON THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE
NATIONAL LIBERATION DAY OF KOREA
VANCOUVER, BC – The Honourable Yonah Martin, Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition in the Senate and Co-Chair of the Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, released the following statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the National Liberation Day of Korea, Gwangbokjeol:
“August 15th, 2020 marks a historic milestone for the national Korean Canadian community, for the Republic of Korea and for people of Korean descent around the world, as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of Korea’s independence from Japanese colonial rule after decades of oppression and suffering. Across Canada, Korea and across the globe, communities and families gather to celebrate this important day. As we raise the Korean National flag, Taegukgi, in celebration, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by the brave patriots of the independence movement, who stood against colonialism and tyranny for the freedom and rights of the Korean people. We also remember the victims of the decades long oppressive rule, and the so-called ‘comfort women and girls’ who were abducted or coerced into military sexual slavery.
