MARCH MEETINGS AND GATHERINGS

In Ottawa, Senator Martin held various separate meetings with the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea and the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey. She met with the Chair of the Canadian Human Rights Council and Secretary General of Amnesty Canada. She attended Dale Smith’s book launch and donated to the Dress for Success Ottawa event to mark International Women’s Day. Finally, she also met with leaders of the Toronto Korean Community. In Vancouver, Senator Martin met with her Sauder EMP mentee and also held various meetings with constituents during the break week.

51ST ANNUAL B.C. LEADERSHIP PRAYER BREAKFAST

Vancouver, BC – On March 24th, Senator Martin attended the 51st Annual B.C. Leadership Prayer Breakfast. This year’s guest speaker was Dr. Santa Ono, 15th President and Vice Chancellor of UBC. The event was attended by 1,000 people from all walks of life: public servants, business leaders, non-profit organizations and students.

CALGARY VISIT & FACL GALA

Calgary, AB - Senator Martin met with members of the Korean community in Calgary along with the Honorary Consul to the Republic of Korea. The following day Senator Martin was invited to give a key-note opening speech at the Federation of Canadian Lawyers – Western Chapter’s second annual gala. "Diversity in the City" is FACL Western's signature event of the year. The gala was an opportunity to showcase the extraordinary achievements of Asian-Canadian trailblazers, learn about their journey and be inspired.

PAKISTAN DAY CELEBRATION

Surrey, BC – On March 19th, Senator Martin attended the Pakistan Day celebration with Senator Salma Ataullahjan. Members of the Pakistani community gathered to commemorate this day of important political transitions and to celebrate their rich heritage and cultural roots through the art of music, dance, food and cultural performances.

EQUAL VOICE - CARLETON CHAPTER

Ottawa, ON – On March 16th, Senator Martin was invited by the Carleton Equal Voice Chapter to give an opening keynote speech to university students pursuing careers in public service. The event included a panel with current staffers in the Prime Minister’s Office, Minister and MP offices.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. FOUNDATION GALA

Vancouver, BC – On March 11th, Senator Martin attended the annual Bridge to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Gala at the Westin Bayshore. The annual fundraiser raises money for the foundation to enhance and develop timely services that S.U.C.C.E.S.S. offers the community. The Gala was attended by several hundred distinguished guests.

C3 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Vancouver, BC – On March 12th, Senator Martin attended the 10th annual C3 Leadership Conference organized by C3 Society and held at UBC Robson Square. Keynote speakers included CBC’s Miyoung Lee and American Filmmaker of “Jeronimo” Joseph Jun. This year’s theme was “Own Your Identity” and aimed to ignite the appreciation for identity in all areas to encourage and empower delegates to make their own path and destiny.

Ottawa, ON - Senator Martin attended the annual Breakfast Forum for Young Canadians on March 9th. The Forum for Young Canadians is an educational program bringing youth together across the country to learn how Canada is governed and also foster leaders of tomorrow.

Burnaby, BC - Senator Martin’s staff and dedicated group of volunteers visited the George Derby Centre. This month there was a special Korean dance performance by Youngjoo Kim and her three pupils for the veterans and residents of George Derby.

BULGARIAN FLAG RAISING CEREMONY IN NEW WESTMINSTER

New Westminster, BC – On March 3rd, Senator Martin joined members of the BC Bulgarian community to raise the Bulgarian Flag at City Hall to mark the 139th Anniversary of Bulgaria’s Liberation Day. This was a historic day as it was the first time the Bulgarian flag was raised at City Hall in the BC community’s history.

Ottawa, ON – On March 1st, the Senate of Canada hosted a social to launch the new Senate website and announce a special partnership with Twitter Canada. The event was well attended by Parliamentarians, national media and Senate employees.

MARCH 1ST INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT

Burnaby, BC – On March 1st, members of the Korean community in British Columbia gathered together with Korean flags to mark the Independence Movement by the Korean people in 1919 after nearly a decade of Japanese military rule. This date is observed by the Korean diaspora around the world.

Vancouver, BC - On February 22nd, Senator Yonah Martin welcomed Kpop star HyunA at the pre-show VIP reception hosted by the Great Canadian Gaming Cooperation and Vancouver Hard Rock Casino. HyunA was invited for an exclusive show to celebrate, recognize and honour Korean culture and influence in communities across BC.

Burnaby, BC - On February 21st, Senator Martin visited Heritage Woods Secondary and spoke to students about the role of the Senate in Canadian democracy. Senator Martin also shared her personal stories to encourage and motivate students to work hard to become global citizens and leaders. ‎

MEETINGS ON THE HILL AND BC

This month,  Senator Martin held several meetings in Ottawa including a meeting with representatives of the BC Dairy Association, Canadian Federation of Students and also with the Korean Cultural Centre. The BC Dairy Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating British Columbians on milk, dairy farming and nutrition. The Canadian Student Federation is ccomprised of over 400,000 students from more than 60 students unions across Canada. Senator Martin met with members of the Bulgarian community to discuss 2017 priorities.

KWCC MEETING & LUNAR NEW YEAR RECEPTION

Ottawa, ON - On February 2nd, Senator Martin facilitated a meeting for the Korean War Commemorative Committee (KWCC) and hosted a Lunar New Year luncheon following the meeting. Attendees included Veterans of the Korean War, members of the Canadian military, and representatives of community organizers that work in partnership to support Korean War veterans.

LUNAR NEW YEAR ON THE HILL

Ottawa, On - On February 1st, Senator Yonah Martin along with her colleagues Senator Lillian Dyck, Senator Thanh Hai Ngo, Senator Victor Oh and Senator Yuen Pau Woo co-hosted the annual Lunar New Year celebration on the Hill. The event included cultural food and a special lion dance performance in the Hall of Honour. The event was attended by Parliamentarians, staff and members of the Ottawa community.

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS IN BC

On January 27th, Senator Martin attended the Lunar New Year Countdown at Aberdeen Centre which was attended by thousands of people in Richmond, BC. On January 28th, Senator Yonah Martin attended the Lunar New Year celebration at the Korean Community Centre in Vancouver, BC. On January 29th, she participated in the Spring Festival Parade in Vancouver's historic Chinatown. ‎

VISIT TO THE CITADELLE

Quebec, QC - On January 27th, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Citadelle in Quebec City, followed by a lunch meeting. Senator Yonah Martin was joined by Korean War Veterans of the Royal 22nd Regiment, Col. Chang Bae Yoon and his family, Hon. Steven Blaney, MP Blaine Calkins and MP Jamie Schmale.

2017 VANCOUVER MODEL UN

Vancouver, BC – Senator Yonah Martin gave an address to the 2017 Vancouver Model United Nations Security Council Committee (VMUN) in relation to their topic of focus "Steps Toward the Reunification of Korea". VMUN is one of Canada's premier educational simulation conferences held over the course of three days in the heart of Vancouver, and the largest high school student-organized Model United Nations conference in North America.

KWVA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Coquitlam, BC – On January 20, Senator Yonah Martin attended the Korean War Veterans Association AGM to thank the Veterans for their years of service and sacrifice, and receive a special certificate of appreciation. The event was also attended by Consul General Gunn Kim, MLA Jane Shin, KWVA members and community leaders.

MONTREAL TET 2017

Montreal, ON – Senator Yonah Martin participated in the Montreal Tet Festival organized in celebration of Lunar New Year and the Year of the Rooster. The event was organized by the Vietnamese Association in Montreal and attended by more than 3000 people. The all-day event included a series of performances highlighting the rich Vietnamese culture and community in Montreal.

Burnaby, BC - Senator Martin’s staff and dedicated group of volunteers visited the George Derby Centre. For the first visit of 2017, Canadian National yo-yo Champion, Harrison Lee, performed several amazing tricks for the residents. ‎

2017 LUNAR NEW YEAR PARTY

Ottawa, ON - On January 14, Senator Yonah Martin attended the Lunar New Year celebration hosted by the Korean Community Association of Ottawa held at Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre. In celebration of Seollal (Korean New Year), Ambassador Daeshik Jo and Embassy staff, veterans of the Korean War, and members of the Ottawa community‎ were in attendance to enjoy cultural performances, food and comraderie.

BURNABY CENTRAL SECONDARY SCHOOL VISIT

Burnaby, BC - On January 12th, Senator Yonah Martin spoke to groups of Grade 10, 11 and 12 students about the Parliament of Canada, including her role as a Senator and the work Senators do on behalf of Canadians. Senator Martin also shared her personal stories to encourage and motivate students to work hard to become global citizens and leaders. ‎

HYACK FESTIVAL ASSOCIATION GALA DINNER

New Westminster, BC -  On January 11, Senator Yonah Martin attended the inauguration ceremony for the new president of the Hyack Festival Association. Hyack’s theme for 2017 is First Nations. First Cities: Telling Our Story. Together. First Nations artist, actor, and director David H. Lyle, Artistic Director; 2017 Ambassadors; and many others were in attendance. Qayqayt First Nation Chief Rhonda Larrabee is the Honorary Parade Marshal for the 2017 Hyack International Parade set for May 27th in New Westminster. On January 29th, Senator Martin also attended the President’s Tea.

INAUGURAL "WOMEN IN POLITICS" SERIES AT UBC

Vancouver, BC - Senator Martin spoke at the inaugural "Women in Politics" event hosted by the UBC Conservatives. She shared her personal stories about life as a UBC student, 21 year teaching career, transition into politics, and life as a working mother. Students in attendance from various fields of study also had the opportunity to ask questions following the presentation. Sen. Martin enjoyed meeting the students and being back on campus of her Alma Mater.
