On behalf of the Senate of Canada and my staff and family, please accept our sincere wishes to you and yours for a happy and healthy Lunar New Year. May this New Year bring you much joy, hope, peace and prosperity.
The past year was a truly historic year for Canada and Korea, with the conclusion, ratification and implementation of the Canada Korea Free Trade Agreement. The CKFTA serves as Canada’s first free trade agreement in the Asia Pacific Region. This agreement will benefit Canadian consumers and also provide increased opportunities and growth of local businesses.
I witnessed the positive impact of the CKFTA during the recent trade mission to Korea (Feb. 8-13) led by International Trade Minister Ed Fast. Canadian business leaders were able to build a network of connections with Korean counterparts to create trade opportunities which will spur economic growth and create jobs in Canada.
2015 is indeed the "Year of the Canada Korea FTA"! It is also the year that will begin the 65th Anniversary of the Korean War (June 25, 2015 to July 27, 2018). Therefore, let us be filled with gratitude for the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today, as we honour all those who served and sacrificed during the Korean War.
The CKFTA is firmly rooted in a strong foundation that has been built selflessly and tirelessly by many before us. The future is bright in this new CKFTA era of greater trade and partnerships.
Happy Lunar New Year one and all!
Deputy Leader of the Government of Canada
