HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015

This album is a collection of some of the highlights of the year. 2015 was a year full of milestones: among many achievements, there were the implementation of the Canada Korea Free Trade Agreement and the beginning of the 65th Anniversary of the Korean War Years; the launch of IPCVSS co-founded and co-chaired by Sen. Martin; the end of the productive 41st Canadian Parliament, the election of a new Government, the opening of the 42nd Parliament, and Sen. Martin's acclimation as the Deputy Leader of the Loyal Opposition in the Senate.

VISIT TO VICTORIA

Victoria, BC - On December 30, Senator Martin travelled to Victoria for various meetings and events. She met with Mr. Byeon, President of Victoria Korean Community Association.  She also met with Gen. Herb Pitts and Peter Seiersen, President of the Korea War Veterans Association of Canada, to continue discussions on several important files. Lastly, Senator Martin delivered greetings on behalf of Canada's Upper Chamber at the BC Legislature to the participants of the 87th British Columbia Youth Parliament (BCYP). ‎

VISIT TO EDMONTON

Edmonton, AB - Senator Martin visited Edmonton from Dec. 19-20 where she had the opportunity to meet with community leaders, speak to youth and young adults and some parents about finding one's successful career path and contributing meaningfully to ‎Canadian Society, and attend a year-end dinner celebration where Korean War Veterans (members of KVA Unit 21) and their spouses were also in attendance. On Sunday, Dec. 20, Senator Martin met with small business leaders, and then attended the worship service at the Edmonton Korean United Church‎.

CHRISTMAS VISIT TO THE GEORGE DERBY CENTRE

Burnaby, BC - On December 19, a group of Senator Martin’s dedicated volunteers went to George Derby Centre for the final monthly visit of 2015. They were joined by the Canada Muse Orchestra who performed Christmas music for the residents.

KVA WESTERN CANADA BRINGS CHRISTMAS CHEER TO GEORGE DERBY

Burnaby, BC - On December 18, Senator Martin visited the George Derby Centre with members of the Korean Veterans Association and the Korean War Veterans Association. The KVA brought presents for the residents and made a donation to the George Derby Centre in support of their programs for veterans.

Ottawa, ON - During the week of December 7, Senator Martin attended various Christmas receptions after the Senate sittings, as well as co-host (as Deputy Leader) a reception for colleagues and staff of her Caucus. She also attended an organizational meeting to promote the Parliamentary Fitness Initiative and National Health and Fitness Day, led by Sen. Nancy Greene Raine and former MP John Westin.

WEEK IN PHOTOS: DECEMBER 1

Ottawa, ON - During the week of December 1, Senator Martin was acclaimed Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and attended various meetings and events: a Christmas Party at the Perley Rideau, a Veterans care facility in Ottawa; opening night of Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Nutcracker production at the National Centre for the Arts; a reception for the installation of the New Speaker of the Senate; and the opening of the new Parliament and the Speech from the Throne, among others.

VISIT TO THE PERLEY AND RIDEAU VETERANS' HEALTH CENTRE

Ottawa, ON - On December 2, Senator Martin visited the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre with members of KVA Unit 7, to bring Christmas cheer to the residents. Senator Martin and the Ambassador of Korea presented service medals to two residents (Korean War veterans). Bill Black, President of KVA Unit 7 also presented Senator Martin with a KVA pin to induct her as an honorary member of their unit.

LAUNCH OF IPCVSS AT THE UN

United Nations, New York City - On November 23, Senator Martin attended the official launch of the International Parliamentary Coalition for Victims of Sexual Slavery (IPCVSS) at the United Nations Headquarters. She was joined by four founding co-chairs of IPCVSS. Senator Martin will serve as Chair of the IPCVSS Steering Committee representing Canada in its first year.

M2 FESTIVAL

Coquitlam, BC - On November 21st, Senator Martin attended the M2 Festival at the Evergreen Cultural Centre. This multicultural music festival showcased talents of musicians from various cultural backgrounds and genres of music. Senator Martin congratulated the performers and the organizers of the festival and applauded the City of Coquitlam's support and vision of a vibrant multicultural community‎ and its upcoming 125th anniversary in 2016.

HAEOREUM FAMILY DAY

Vancouver, BC - On November 21st, Senator Martin attended the Haeoreum Family Day Event held at the Korean Cultural Centre, an annual event for Korean adoptees and families and guests. Korean tradition and culture was celebrated through various performances and demonstrations of traditional ceremonies. It was a special day for students of Haeoreum Korean Heritage School and their families. Many people were in attendance, including veterans and leaders of the Korean community to support and congratulate the families of Haeoreum.

(IN)VISIBLE: THE SPIRITUAL WORLD OF TAIWAN THROUGH CONTEMPORARY ART

Vancouver, BC - On November 20, Senator Martin attended the opening night of (In)visible: The Spiritual World of Taiwan through Contemporary Art, at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology. The art on display featured the work of seven contemporary Taiwanese artists who explore coexistence of modernity and tradition, while exhibiting the significance of the spiritual world of contemporary Taiwan.

SANJGA (BOXES) OPENING NIGHT AND RECEPTION

Burnaby, BC - On November 19, Senator Martin attended the opening night of a production entitled “SANGJA” at the Shadbolt Centre. The show was a joint production of a Canadian theatre company, Pangea Arts, and a South Korean artistic group, ArtStage SAN. The unique production was a historic collaboration that tells the emotional story of a Canadian adoptee who returns to his native country of Korea.

2ND ANNUAL CANADA INTERNATIONAL FILM AND TELEVISION FESTIVAL

New Westminster, BC - On November 8, Senator Martin attended the 2nd Annual Canada International Film and Television Festival award ceremony, organized by a committee chaired by Demi Zhang. The film festival encourages multiculturalism by featuring films from around the world. Senator Martin had the opportunity to bring greetings on behalf of the Senate of Canada and to present one of the winners with an award.

UNVEILING OF THE KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL STONE

Pitt Meadows, BC - On October 25th, Senator Martin and His Worship John Becker, Mayor of Pitt Meadows,  unveiled a Memorial Stone commemorating the Korean War. The stone is dedicated to all those who served and sacrificed their lives in the Korean War. Senator Martin brought remarks on behalf of the Senate of Canada to the veterans and their families and dignitaries and guests that gathered for the special dedication ceremony.

CHINESE CANADIAN MILITARY MUSEUM GALA DINNER

Vancouver, BC - On October 24th, Senator Martin attended the Chinese Canadian Military Museum Gala Dinner, as a guest of Col. Howe Lee (co-founder of the museum society) and his wife, Hilda. The evening commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. It was a sold out event attended by Veterans of WWII, the Korean War and others, members of the Canadian military, many dignitaries and distinguished guests. Retired Senator Romeo Dallaire was the keynote speaker.

GEORGE DERBY VISIT

Burnaby, BC - On October 24th, Senator Martin and a group of dedicated volunteers visited the George Derby Centre, as part of her monthly program. Senator Martin was joined by students from Joyful Music Academy who performed various songs on the piano for the residents.

KWVA LUNCHEON

Burnaby, BC - On October 20th, Senator Martin attended a luncheon hosted by the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) Western Canada Chapter, as an early year-end event during this 65th anniversary year of the start of the Korean War. The luncheon was well attended by Veterans of the Korean War of BC and their spouses.

VISIT TO CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Abbotsford, BC - On October 15th, Senator Martin visited Cornerstone Christian School to speak with students about the Parliament of Canada, including her role as Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate. Senator Martin also shared her personal life experiences to encourage and motivate students to work hard to achieve their dreams.

OCTOBER AMENIDA VISIT

Surrey, BC - On October 10th, Senator Martin visited the Amenida Seniors' Community to launch a visit program with her dedicated team of volunteers. Similar to the George Derby Centre visits, Senator Martin plans to visit Amenida regularly to visit with the residents and provide entertainment for them. Joyful Music Academy performed for the residents of Amenida this month. Senator Martin also shared photos of her recent activities in the community with the residents.

TAIWAN NATIONAL DAY

Vancouver, BC - On October 9th, Senator Martin attended the Taiwan National Day Celebrations held at the Vancouver Convention Centre East celebrating Taiwan's 104th National Day, which was organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office of Vancouver. Many politicians and community leaders were in attendance, including Director General William Chuang.

SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONVOCATION CEREMONY

Burnaby, BC - On October 8, Senator Martin participated in the platform party for Simon Fraser University’s 50th Anniversary Convocation Ceremony. Graduates included students who completed their respective programs in the Summer from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, and Faculty of Health Sciences.

CALGARY KOREAN HEALTH FAIR

Calgary, AB – Senator Martin attended the 1st Calgary Korean Health Fair took place at Calgary Korean Association on October 3rd. Senator Martin congratulated the Health Fair Organizing Committee for their leadership in making this community event a success. Nearly 30 booths were installed including from Calgary Police Service, Red Cross, Calgary Public Library, Mount Royal University massage association etc.

CALGARY KOREAN SCHOLARSHIP AWARD CEREMONY

Calgary, AB – On October 3, Senator Martin attended the 8th Annual Calgary Korean Scholarship Foundation’s Scholarship Award Ceremony. The Foundation awarded scholarships to high school and post-secondary students who have demonstrated academic excellence. Also, as Canadian honorary advisor to newly established Korean War Veterans of Canada Scholarship, Senator was invited to present the award to two KWVCS recipients from Alberta and recognized their grandfathers service and sacrifice during the Korean War.

2015 IMJIN CLASSIC COMMEMORATIVE HOCKEY GAME

Kanata, ON – On Sept. 26th, Senator Martin attended the 3rd Annual Imjin Classic Commemorative Hockey Game at the Canadian Tire Centre. This commemorative event was held to honour the Veterans of the Korean War who played hockey during the Korean War in 1952-3. Two of the Regiments that fought in Korea - the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the Royal 22eme Regiment (R22R or VanDoos) squared off against each other for the Imjin Classic Cup. The spectators consisted of Veterans of the Korean War, military and regimental representatives, family and friends of Veterans and players along with members of the regional Korean Canadian community.

K-LINC FLC 2015 REUNION

Toronto, ON – On Sept. 25th, Senator Martin delivered opening remarks at  the Korean Leaders International Network Consortium (K-LINC) 2015 FLC Toronto Global Leadership Conference and Reunion. The event gathered FLC alumni from across the world for a 3 day conference on leadership, connecting heart to heart and people to people. His Excellency Daeshik JO (Korea's Ambassador to Canada), Consul representatives of the Korean Consulate in Toronto, Overseas Koreans Foundation representatives from Korea, ‎and other guests were also in attendance.

UTKSA KOWIN SPEAKER SERIES

Toronto, ON – On Sept. 24th, Senator Martin addressed students of the University of Toronto at a joint KOWIN/UTKSA Speaker Series event with H.E. Daeshik JO, Korea's Ambassador in Canada as the keynote speaker. The seminar was focused on providing inspiration to the youth and encouraging them to find their identity, find their passion and follow their hearts in becoming successful global citizens. The President and Vice-President of KOWIN Toronto, Chairman and Administrator of NUAC Eastern Canada Chapter, staff of the Korean Consulate in Toronto and more than 100 students were in attendance.

Vancouver, BC - Senator Martin was honoured as one of UBC Faculty of Education’s (top) 100‎ in their Year of the Alumni, a celebration of 100 years of excellence. On September 23, she attended a dinner with other honorees and their guests at the new Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre.

33RD ANNUAL BENEFIT CONCERT OF VANCOUVER ZION MISSION CHOIR

New Westminster, BC - On September 19th, Senator Martin attended the 33rd Annual Benefit Concert of the Vancouver Zion Mission Choir. Proceeds from the fundraising drive at the concert will contribute towards efforts to end tuberculosis in North Korea through the Eugene Bell Foundation. Many people were in attendance, including Ambassador Kie-Cheon Lee, Honourable Stockwell Day and CPC Candidate of Burnaby North Seymour, Mike Little.

Burnaby, BC - On September 19th, Senator Martin visited George Derby Centre with her dedicated team of volunteers. Emma LeBlanc, the granddaughter of late Glenn Palmer, performed for the residents and the visiting veterans. Senator Martin also attended the Korean War Commemorative Alliance meeting that took place at George Derby Centre. It was attended by leaders of various organizations within the alliance to discuss the annual Korean War Veterans Day Ceremony and related matters.

NATIONAL CONGRESS OF CHINESE CANADIANS NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Vancouver, BC - On September 19th, Senator Martin attended a roundtable meeting during the Convention of the National Congress of Chinese Canadians (NCCC), and met with national leaders of the NCCC Executive, representing various communities across Canada.  The roundtable discussion focused on the economic relationship between Canada and China as well as priorities of the regional communities.

13TH CANADA KOREA FORUM

Waterloo, ON – From Sept. 17th to 18th, Senator Martin participated in the Canada Korea Forum organized by  the Centre for International Governance (CIGI). The Forum brought together former Ambassadors and scholars from Korea and Canada to discuss the “Innovation and the New Canada Korea Relationship” following the implementation of the historic Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement at the start of 2015, and a new era of Strategic Partnership.

18TH ANNUAL ENCHANTED MUSIC OF GRACE J.E. LEE

Vancouver, BC - On September 16, Senator Martin attended the 18th Anniversary performance of Enchanted Music by Grace Jong Eun Lee. The concert featured the gayageum, a traditional Korean instrument. The event also raised awareness of diseases, in particular tuberculosis, that are prevalent in North Korea.

Burnaby, BC - On September 12, Senator Martin attended the 17th Annual Vancouver Korean-Canadian Scholarship Foundation’s Scholarship Award Ceremony. The Foundation awarded 36 scholarships to post-secondary students who have demonstrated academic excellence and community service.

HISTORIC CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY

Vancouver, BC - On September 11, Senator Martin attended a citizenship ceremony presided by, His Honour, Judge Richard Watt. 77 individuals received their Canadian citizenship from nearly 20 different countries of origin. Senator Martin gave remarks to the new Canadians and welcomed them to Canada. It was also a special ceremony, since it was Judge Watt’s final citizenship ceremony as a citizenship judge.

AMB. BRUCE LINGHU'S FAREWELL DINNER

Richmond, BC - On September 3rd, Senator Martin, as a Director of the Canada Taiwan Parliamentary Group was invited to a farewell dinner for Amb. Bruce Linghu of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada. Many guests were in attendance, including Minister Alice Wong and Minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay and members of the metro-Vancouver Taiwanese community.

VISIT WITH KOREAN WAR VETERANS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS IN SASKATOON

Saskatoon, SK - On August 26th, Senator Martin was invited to a luncheon with the Korean War Veterans in Saskatoon where she gave each veterans in attendance a copy of the Korean War Veterans Day Act in appreciation of their service and sacrifice. Luncheon was followed by a productive meeting with Korean-Canadian community leaders of Saskatoon. In attendance were past and present presidents and other leaders of the Saskatoon Korean community.

GEORGE DERBY VISIT

Burnaby, BC - On August 22nd, Senator Martin visited the residents of George Derby Centre with her dedicated team of volunteers. The Korean Traditional Dance team led by Youngjoo Kim performed for the residents, with beautiful fans and drums. Senator Martin also shared photos from the July 27th Korean War Veterans Day Ceremonies held across the country in Burnaby, BC; Calgary, AB; Winnipeg, MB, Brampton, ON; and Ottawa, ON.

18TH CONVENTION OF TEOCHEW INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION

Vancouver, BC - On August 20th, Senator Martin attended the 18th Convention of Teochew International Federation at the Vancouver Convention Centre. More than 3000 delegates from over 200 Teochew associations from around the world were in attendance. Many dignitaries attended to support the event, including Her Excellency Judith Guichon, Minister Alice Wong, Minister Jason Kenney, and Minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

PAKISTAN FESTIVAL - 69TH ANNIVERSARY OF PAKISTAN'S INDEPENDENCE

Surrey, BC - On August 16th, Senator Martin attended the Pakistan Festival celebrating the Independence Day of Pakistan at Holland Park. Many dignitaries were in attendance, including Minister Ed Fast and Consul General Muhammad Tariq. The festival was organized by the Pakistan Festival Organizing Committee and highlighted the music, culture, fashion and cuisine of Pakistan.

V-J DAY EVENT

Vancouver, BC - On August 15th, Senator Martin attended the Victory over Japan Day event on the street outside the Chinese Cultural Centre, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second Wold War. The event was organized by the BC Veterans Commemorative Association, the Pacific Unit (280) of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans (ANAVETs) in Canada, and the Chinese Canadian Community of Greater Vancouver to honour the contributions of Canadians of Chinese descent who served and sacrificed in Canada's war efforts in the Pacific region during WWII.

Burnaby, BC - On August 14th, Senator Martin attended the Yonsei College of Nursing alumni reunion. Senator Martin shared her special connection with Yonsei as her late father had completed graduate studies at Yonsei University. Many alumni were in attendance from Canada, the United States, Germany, and New Zealand.

70TH ANNIVERSARY OF KOREAN INDEPENDENCE BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT & DINNER

Surrey, BC - On August 14th, Senator Martin attended a dinner following a benefit golf tournament  to mark the 70th anniversary of  Korea's Independence from Japanese colonialism. For the formal program, Amb. Kie-Cheon Lee, dignitaries and Veterans of the Korean War were in attendance among tournament participants.

VANCOUVER PINOY FESTIVAL 2015

Vancouver, BC - On August 9th, Senator Martin attended the 6th Annual Pinoy Fiesta Vancouver at Memorial South Park to celebrate Filipino culture with many community organizations and members of the Vancouver community. There were performances by local bands and artists, and a special performance by Jojo Quimpo and his band, with special guest Minister Ed Fast on the keyboard, supported by Senator Enverga, Senator Martin and MP Wai Young.

KOREAN HERITAGE DAY FESTIVAL 2015

Burnaby, BC - On August 8th, Senator Martin attended the 14th Annual Korean Cultural Heritage Festival at Swangard Stadium. There were many performances showcasing Korea's talent from traditional to contemporary arts, including drummers and Taekwondo demonstrations. Dignitaries, community leaders and other supporters were in attendance to celebrate Korean culture.

TELA FASHION SHOW AND EXHIBITION 2015

Richmond, BC - On August 7th, Senator Martin attended Tela Fashion Show and Exhibition 2015, the first fashion show of its kind, showcasing designs from Filipino designers. Dignitaries and community supporters were in attendance to witness the beautiful creations and collections of Mindanao Fashion, promoting the use of eco-friendly materials and indigenous fabrics.

JULY 27 KOREAN WAR VETERANS DAY

CANADA - July 27th marked the 3rd annual Korean War Veterans Day and the 62nd Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. This day honours all Canadians who served in the Korean War, including the 516 who made the ultimate sacrifice. To remember all those who served with distinction and pride, ceremonies were held across the country in Burnaby, BC; Calgary, AB; Winnipeg, MB, Brampton, ON; and Ottawa, ON.

MULTICULTURAL NIGHT AT THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER NIGHT MARKET

Richmond, BC - On July 10th, Senator Martin attended the 3rd Annual Multicultural Night at the International Summer Night Market. There were performances to celebrate this annual tradition that has built its reputation as a truly diverse event in Richmond. Dignitaries and other supporters were in attendance to celebrate diversity and enjoy the night market experience.

ANNOUNCEMENT WITH MINISTERS NICHOLSON AND FINDLAY

Burnaby, BC - On July 8th, Senator Martin attended an announcement made by the Hon. Rob Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, addressing Child, Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM) with the Commonwealth of Learning. This announcement builds on Canada's on-going efforts to end CEFM and highlights Canada's leadership on this issue world-wide. Min. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, MP Russ Hiebert and the Commonwealth of Learning staff were also in attendance.

Burnaby, BC - On July 4th, as part of Senator Martin's monthly visit to George Derby Centre, Senator Martin visited the residents with her dedicated team of volunteers. The lion dance team from Northern Shaolin Traditional Martial Arts performed for the residents wishing them good health.

2015 MISS BC LEADERSHIP WEEKEND AND CROWNING GALA

Fort Langley, BC - On July 4th and 5th, Senator Martin attended the Miss BC Leadership Program to speak to the contestants about leadership and encourage them to strive towards their goals. Senator Martin also attended the Crowning Gala on July 5th to support the contestants and witnessed the crowning of Miss, Miss Teen and Mrs. BC 2015. More than 250 people were in attendance, including past and present pageant winners, Cops for Cancer representatives, and family and friends of the contestants.

CANADA DAY 2015

Vancouver, BC - On July 1st, Senator Martin celebrated Canada Day leading a parade through Granville Island to Ron Basford Park and speaking on behalf of the Government of Canada, highlighting the Government's stewardship, as well as the effective management of the the Island by the Granville Island Trust. The event was well attended with more than 50,000 people. She then celebrated Canada Day with the Youth Celebrate Canada Day (YCCD) committee and the local community.

COMMEMORATION OF THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KOREAN WAR

Ottawa, ON - On June 21st, Senator Martin attended ceremonies in Ottawa to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the breakout of the Korean War. The first ceremony was held at the Monument to the Canadian Fallen and was attended by a small group of veterans and the Korean Canadian community. The second ceremony occurred at the National War Memorial; there were many dignitaries, veterans, and community leaders in attendance to honour the service of Korean War Veterans and the sacrifices made during the Korean War.

DEAF-BLIND AWARENESS MONTH ON THE HILL

Ottawa, ON - On June 18, Senator Martin co-hosted a reception with colleagues Sen. Jim Munson and the Hon. Vim Kochhar to recognize June as Deaf-Blind Awareness Month. It was an opportunity to honour the lives and achievements of all those who are deaf-blind and to raise awareness across Canada. A motion earlier this month was unanimously adopted in the Chamber recognizing June as Deaf-Blind Awareness Month.

Ottawa, ON - On May 28, Senator Martin attended a classical music concert entitled “Reverberations of Aboriginal Inspirations” on Parliament Hill. The concert raised awareness of the stories of Aboriginal people in Canada, and the songs were spiritually connected to their legends and symbols. 4th CANADA KOREA DIALOGUE ON THE HILL

Ottawa, ON - Senator Martin moderated with MP Barry Devolin and Mrs. Young-Hae Lee the 4th Annual Canada Korea Dialogue Series on Parliament Hill with the theme “Post CKFTA: What Lies Ahead”. Parliamentarians, diplomats and officials, Korean War Veterans, regional community leaders and stakeholders gathered on Parliament Hill on May 26, 2015 to discuss important trade, security and bilateral cooperation between Canada and Korea. The evening opened with welcoming remarks by The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food Canada.

Vancouver, BC - On March 28th, Prime Minister Stephen Harper marked the semi-centennial anniversary of the Canadian flag by honouring 50 Canadina and oragnizations across Canada with a flag recognizing their significant contributions to Canada. Senator Martin had the honour of presenting one of the 50th Anniversary Canadian flag to Col. Lee at S.U.C.C.E.S.S’s annual gala. Col. Howe Lee was recognized for making a difference in Canada with his commitment to the military, while also serving his community in various capacities.

KOREAN LUNAR NEW YEAR IN BC & THE HILL

Ottawa, ON - A successful luncheon and roundtable with Minister Ed Fast and members of the Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group was held on February 19th. His Excellency Cho Hee-young, Korean War Veterans and representatives of the Korean Community all gathered to celebrate the recently concluded CKFTA Trade Mission and also look ahead to the upcoming 65th Anniversary of the Korean War Years as well as Lunar New Year of the Sheep.
