GEORGE DERBY CHRISTMAS CONCERT & VISIT

Burnaby, BC - On December 6th, Senator Martin and a team of dedicated volunteers visited the George Derby Centre for a Christmas visit. The visit featured entertainment from the Canada Muse Orchestra and Choirs that sang Christmas songs to the residents.

WWII COMMEMORATIVE PINS AND CERTIFICATES PRESENTATION

Burnaby, BC - On November 28th, Senator Martin honoured World War II veterans at the George Derby centre by presenting them with commemorative lapel pins and certificates. Senator Martin presented pins to 29 residents that served in World War II, and 215 residents in total will be receiving the pins and certificates. The pins commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War.

CANADA KOREA SOCIETY 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Ottawa, ON - On November 25th, Senator Martin attended the CKS 30th Anniversary AGM & Banquet with the Hon. Ed Fast to commemorate the CKS 30 year annivesary and the official ratification of Bill C41 (the Canada Korea Free Trade Agreement).

Two solo violin pieces were performed by Canadian-Korean Judy Kang, and the background music performed by The Polished Brass Quintet. Following the anthems of both Canada and Korea, the legendary, poetic Korean folk song “Arirang” was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

CANADA-BULGARIA INTERPARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP

Ottawa, ON – On November 24th, Senator Martin, along with fellow Parliamentarians, met for a dinner reception hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria for the first ever Canada- Bulgaria Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group meeting. Senator Martin spoke on Canada and Bulgaria’s strong bilateral trade relationship, making it one of the strongest in South-East Europe, as well as the ties and values that unite Canadians and Bulgarians together.

Motivated by their shared love for democracy and freedom, more than 30,000 Canadians trace their origins to Bulgaria, bringing with them their undeniable ethics of hard work, appreciation of education and deep respect for their religion and traditions.

Senator Martin was elected as Vice-Chair, along with MP Russ Hiebert, for the New Canada-Bulgaria Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group.

UKCIA ECONOMIC FORUM

Coquitlam, BC - On November 22nd, Senator Martin participated in the UKCIA Economic Forum and CKFTA Roundtable. Senator Martin was one of the panel speakers discussing the economic benefits that the free trade implies for Canada and Korea. The discussion brought together the participation of 1, 1.5, and 2nd generation Korean-Canadian business and community leaders and the participation of the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce.

Surrey, BC - On November 21st, Senator Martin attended NUAC’s New Generation Conference and was one of the key note speakers. The weekend conference discusses the issues pertaining to the future of Korea, and the hope for unification to bring peace to the peninsula.

PAUL YUZYK AWARD

Vancouver, BC - On October 24th, Senator Martin attended the ceremony for the 2014 Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism. The award was given to Vancouver’s Tatay Tom Avendano, by the Honourable Jason Kenney Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism. The Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism commemorates the late Senator Yuzyk’s pioneering legacy in establishing multiculturalism as one of the fundamental characteristics of Canadian heritage and identity. The award recognizes Tatay Tom’s significant contributions to multiculturalism and integration of newcomers.

Burnaby, BC - On October 18th, Senator Martin visited the George Derby Centre with a group of volunteers for her monthly visit with the residents. They were joined by two young, talented acapella singers, Joshua and Jeremiah, who sang to the residents.

PRESIDENT PARK GEUN-HYE, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA STATE VISIT TO CANADA

Ottawa, ON – From September 20-22nd, President Park Geun-hye made a state visit to Canada, the first state visit since 1999. Senator Martin welcomed the president at the Canada Reception Centre on Saturday and attended a community dinner organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. On Sunday, Senator Martin joined the state dinner hosted by the Governor General of Canada. On Monday, Senator Martin took part in a working luncheon with the President and the Prime Minister on Parliament Hill. The two leaders made a joint statement following the official signing of the CKFTA on September 22, making a historic day for Canada and Korea .

PPCL/R22R's 100TH ANNIVERSARY HILL VISIT

Ottawa, ON - On September 18th, two Canadian regiments, the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the Royal 22ndRegiment (R22R or VanDoos) visited Parliament Hill to celebrate their 100thanniversaries. Senator Yonah Martin and Senator Joseph Day made statements in the Senate Chamber to commemorate this important occasion.

GD VISIT

Burnaby, BC - On September 13th, Senator Martin visited the George Derby Centre with Minister of Veteran Affairs Julian Fantino. They toured the facility, and visited with residents. For Senator Martin's monthly visit portion, she was joined by a group of dedicated volunteers and singers Doug and Krista Pavane to entertain the residents.

KOREA TRIP

Seoul, Korea – From Sept.1-5th, Senator Martin, Co-Chair of the Canada-Korea Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group, visited Seoul, Korea with Co-Chair M.P. Barry Devolin and PS Erin O’Toole (Parliamentary Secretary to International Trade). The delegation went to the National Assembly to meet with Korean legislators about the speedy ratification of the Canada Korea FTA. They also visited the National War Museum and participated in two wreath-laying ceremonies at the Canadian 60th Anniversary Memorial and at the Canadian section of the Hall of Honour.

PUMASSI 'THANK YOU FROM KOREA'

Various regions – From July 18–29th, a group of students of H2O Pumassi: were in Canada on their "Thank you from Korea" Canada Tour to visit the Korean War Veterans of Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Brampton and Burlington to express their gratitude for the Veterans’ sacrifice during the Korean War. Students of the Pumassi tour are selected across Korea from a “Letter Writing Contest” sponsored by H2O Pumassi. The Korean War Veterans were touched by the heartfelt letters written by the young Korean students.

KOREAN WAR VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AND MARCH

Burnaby, BC - On July 26th, Senator Martin was joined by many dignitaries, veterans, and the wider community in commemorating Korean War Veterans Day at the Ambassador of Peace memorial in Burnaby Central Park. There was a wreath-laying ceremony followed by a March for Peace and Freedom along Boundary Road.

Coquitlam, BC - On April 26th, Senator Martin attended a candlelight vigil for Korea at Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Fatima parishioners, dignitaries, Korean Canadian Community leaders, and hundreds of supporters participated in the "Candlelight Vigil for Korea" in honour of the victims and their families of the Sewol ferry tragedy that occurred on April 16, 2014 in South Korea.

Over 200 people were in attendance to celebrate this milestone trade agreement.

TEOCHEW

Vancouver, BC - On February 1st, Senator Martin attended the 18th Convention of Teochew International Federation Organizing Committee at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The Teochew Society succeeded in winning the bid to host the next International Convention, which will be held in Vancouver in the summer of 2015This international event will include a 3-day convention, a Trade/Economic and Tourism Forum, and a trade exhibition, welcoming over 3000 delegates from 25 countries. The ceremony establishing the organizing committee included many dignitaries and also celebrated the Lunar New Year.

KIM'S CONVENIENCE

Ottawa, ON - On January 29th, Senator Martin attended a play called “Kim’s Convenience” by Ins Choi, a  Korean-Canadian writer. The story is from his personal experience about intergenerational clashes in a Korean-Canadian family. Senator Martin met the cast after the play and congratulated them on their successful show.

RE-OPENING OF THE KOREAN COMMUNITY CENTRE

Vancouver, BC - On January 25th, Senator Martin attended the re-opening of the Korean Community Center of B.C in Vancouver. After many renovations supported by CIFF, the Center re-opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony which included many community leaders.

KOREAN CULTURE AND HERITAGE SOCIETY CENTRE CEREMONY

Burnaby, BC - On January 19th, Senator Martin attended the Korean Cultural Heritage Society’s 2014 Kick-off Ceremony in Burnaby, BC. The ceremony recognized the work of past president Ms. Grace Lee, and introduced the new president Mr. Peter Suk as well as the new directors. The Society engages in many community activities.  They host the annual Korean Heritage Day Festival in Coquitlam.

New Westminster, BC - On January 18th, Senator Martin attended a seminar hosted by the Korean Canadian Schools Association of the Western Chapter in New Westminster, BC. The Association provides Korean language training in Canada.

Vancouver, BC - On January 18th, Senator Martin attended the KVA’s AGM at the Korean Cultural Centre in Vancouver, BC. Senator Martin also presented a letter of recognition to Mr. Jai Boong Kim for his contributions during the Korean War on behalf of Minister of Veteran Affairs, Julian Fantino.

GEORGE DERBY VISIT

Burnaby, BC - On January 11th, Senator Martin and her volunteer team visited the George Derby Centre in Burnaby, BC. The New Year visit was kicked off with a performance by Korean Drummers from the Korean Traditional Arts Society. The 2013 volunteer team also received certificates of appreciation for their contributions.
