Coquitlam B.C- On November 16th, Senator Martin attended a Filipiniana Night Fundraiser at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Coquitlam. The fundraiser raised money to help support the church’s infrastructure and school improvement projects.

VETERANS WEEK

Senator Martin attended various tribute events during the Veterans Week to honour and to show respect to the fallen and living heroes.  She attended the the ceremony in the Senate Chamber to launch Veterans week, Parliamentary ceremony at the National War Memorial, Candlelight Tribute in Ottawa, the Vancouver Asian Film Festival’s screening of the Memory of the Forgotten War, Remembrance Ceremony at George Derby center, and Wreath Laying Ceremony at Burnaby Central Park.

CANADA-KOREA FORUM

 Senator Martin attended the Canada-Korea Forum on November 7th and 8th. It was established to examine the bilateral relationship between Canada and the Republic of Korea, with high-level dialogue on current important issues to both countries. This year’s event was  co-hosted by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the University of British Columbia, the Canada Korea Society, and the offices of the Hon. Yonah Martin, Senator and Mr. Barry Devolin, MP, co-Chairs of the C-K Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group.

2013 ROLLING RAMPAGE

Ottawa- 2013 Rolling Rampage on the Hill, featuring 10K Wheelchair Road Race, 1K Parliamentary Wheelchair Relay and Elementary School Relay happened on October 10th.  This event was co-chaired by Senator Yonah Martin and Senator Jim Munson and co-organized by Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons and the Ottawa Lions Athletic Club. It brought together Parliamentarians, world class athletes, students, supporters and members of the community to raise awareness about physical disabilities and those living with them.

50TH YEAR OF CANADA AND KOREA

B.C- Many events took place from September 17th-22nd to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Korea. Events were held in various parts of the Lower Mainland and featured the Maranatha Dance Group (from Seoul, Korea) who celebrated the works of Canadian missionaries. The events were held by the Association for Korea and Canada Cultural Exchange. Former Prime Minister Chung, Un-Chan joined the group in their visit.

GEORGE DERBY CENTRE VIST


Burnaby B.C- Senator Martin and a dedicated team of volunteers went to visit the residents of George Derby Centre. During this visit, our volunteers held a mini talent show for the veterans and residents. Senator Martin with her daughter Kiana even sang together. Senator Martin has been a long time supporter of George Derby Centre where war veterans reside including Korean War veterans.

OPENING OF ST. JOHN HOSPICE

Vancouver BC- Senator Martin attended the opening of St. John Hospice. St. John Hospice is the first community hospice on Vancouver’s West Side, located on the UBC campus and will provide 14 fully furnished ensuite bedrooms. In partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Providence Health Care and the University of British Columbia, the Vancouver Commandery of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem and the Order of St. John Palliative Care Foundation have established the building, furnishings and landscaping.

“BRUSHES WITH STRANGERS” ART EXHIBIT

Vancouver BC-  Art Exhibit “Brushes with Strangers” unveiled the art of Filipino artists, Esmie Gayo McLaren,  Ruby Gomez Peabody and Danvic Briones. The Filipino immigrants in Canada decided to collaborate their arts by bringing their own stories and paint on the canvasses.

CONFERENCE FOR THE CANADIAN COALITION OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM) AND ACUPUNTUR ASSOCIATION (CCTAA)

Vancouver BC-   TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Associations from BC, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, and Newfoundland gathered at the Conference to address potential amendments to the current Federal Excise Tax Act, such as  to  fully legally recognize Traditional Chinese and Acupuncture Health Care Profession to be exempted from HST/GST taxes. At the conference,  the signatures of 5 provinces for HST/GST review were collected.

12TH ANNUAL KOREAN HERITAGE DAY FESTIVAL

COQUITLAM, BC - Senator Martin attended the 12th Annual Korean Heritage Day Festival on August 10th at Blue Mountain Park in Coquitlam. The annual event is the largest Korean cultural event in the Lower Mainland and features Korean performances, music, and food. This year’s festival also celebrated the special 50th Anniversary of Canada-Korea diplomatic relations.

COQUITLAM, BC – The World OKTA Trade School program is an annual three-day informational and networking conference for young business professionals to learn basics of international trade and network within the Korean community. REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY AT THE UNITED NATIONS MEMORIAL CEMETERY IN KOREA

BUSAN, KOREA – Senator Martin participated in a remembrance ceremony at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) in Busan, Korea. The United Nations Memorial Ceremony in Korea (UNMCK) is the world`s only cemetery of the United Nations, and the names of the 516 Korean War Veterans are inscribed on the Wall of Remembrance at the UNMCK.

UNVEILING CEREMONY OF THE CANADIAN KOREAN WAR MONUMENT IN SEOUL

SEOUL, KOREA – Senator Martin participated in the unveiling ceremony of a new Canadian monument dedicated to the Korean War Veterans. This new monument is located at the Republic of Korea`s National War Museum in Seoul.

KOREA REVISIT PROGRAM

 Senator Martin with Minister of Veterans Affairs, Hon. Julian Fantino, fellow Parliamentarians and the veterans participated in the Revisit Korea Program this past July. It was to remember and acknowledge  the contributions and the sacrifice that the veterans have made during the Korean War. The visit itself was very special as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and Year of Korean War Veterans.

2ND ANNUAL CANADA KOREA DIALOGUE SERIES ON THE HILL

OTTAWA, ON - The 2nd Annual Canada Korea Dialogue Series on the Hill was co-presented by Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group (CKIFG) and Canada Korea Society (CKS). The event was held to reaffirm the importance and unlimited potential of the Canada Korea bilateral relationship.

The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Asia Pacific made special opening remarks and explained the status of the on-going FTA negotiations. Four panelists - Ambassador Cho Hee-yong, Senator Joseph Day, Parliamentary Secretary Andrew Saxton, and Professor Jacob Kovalio - delivered informational speeches related to trade, economic cooperation, and global security.

Senator Martin is a Co-Chair of CKIFG, and she delivered a welcoming remark at this event.

OTTAWA, ON – Senator Martin co-emceed the 48th National Prayer Breakfast Dinner with Senator Don Meredith on June 3rd, 2013. They keynote speaker of this event was Canada’s finest dramatic tenor, Ben Heppner.

On the following day, Senator Martin attended the Breakfast as a participant. The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual event hosted by the Speakers of the Senate and the House of Commons. The Breakfast was attended by the representatives of all three political parties (Hon. Jason Kenney, CPC; Joe Comartin, NDP; Hon. Justin Trudeau, Liberals) and Dr. Andrew Bennett,  Ambassador of the Office of Religious Freedoms.

KOREAN COMMUNITY CENTRE CIFF FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENT

VANCOUVER, BC – On behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, Senator Martin announced the Government of Canada’s continuous support for upgrades to the Korean Community Centre.

Under the Government of Canada's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), $226,602 will be invested to modernize the facility and create a better recreational experience for its visitors.

Senator Martin attended this event on behalf of the Government of Canada. The event was attended by 500+ people, including many senior officers of the Canadian Forces and the Canadian Cadet Corps.

2013 C3 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

VANCOUVER, BC – Senator Martin attended the 2013 C3 Leadership Conference on March 9th, 2013. This year’s conference, with the theme of “how to stand out among the crowd and break through that final barrier,” provided invaluable opportunities for young students. Through the information sessions and roundtable discussions, participants learned to develop their professional skills and talents.

Senator Martin expressed her warmest greetings to all of the delegates, mentors and speakers participating in the sixth annual Leadership Conference. Senator Martin co-founded the C3 Society (www.c3society.org) in 2003.

2013 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY CELEBRATION

VANCOUVER, BC – On March 2nd, 2013, Senator Martin attended the 2013 International Women's Day Celebration and Outstanding Chinese Women Award Ceremony hosted by the Chinese Women Association of Vancouver. 

The Chinese Women Association (CWA) was established in 2002 by a group of Chinese-Canadian women in order to help new Canadian immigrants. The Outstanding Chinese Women Awards Night is annually held to celebrate International Women’s Day and to recognize achievements of local Chinese-Canadians.

94TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARCH 1ST INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT IN KOREA

VANCOUVER, BC – Senator Martin delivered her speech during the 94th anniversary of South Korea’s Independence Movement Day. Canadians, namely Dr. Frank Schofield, Dr. Oliver Avison and Frederick Arthur McKenzie helped South Korea in their fight for independence against the Japanese colonial rule.

MP BARRY DEVOLIN ORDER OF DIPLOMATIC SERVICE MERIT AWARD CEREMONY

OTTAWA, ON – The Government of the Republic of Korea awarded the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit (Heung-in Medal) to MP Barry Devolin. Ambassador Cho Hee-yong presented this award at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Canada.

Senator Martin attended the award ceremony along with other MPs and leaders of the Korean-Canadian community. Senator Martin expressed her gratitude to MP Devolin for his contribution to Korea-Canada diplomatic relations.

THE INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT GEUN-HYE PARK IN SOUTH KOREA

SOUTH KOREA – Senator Martin joined the Canadian delegation to attend the Inauguration of the president of the Republic of Korea, President Geun-hye Park. The Canadian delegation was led by the Governor General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, and included Parliamentary Secretary Deepak Obhrai, MP Barry Devolin and MP Jasvir Sandhu.

Senator Martin participated in the inauguration ceremony, a wreath laying ceremony at the War Museum of Korea, and a tour of the De-Militerized Zone.

She also met with Minister Park Sung Choon of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and other key stakeholders.

2013 VANCOUVER CHINATOWN PARADE

VANCOUVER, BC – The Chinese New Year Parade is one of the three largest non-commercial annual parades in Vancouver. The 2013 Parade celebrated its 40th anniversary and attracted more than 60 entries and 3,000 participants, including those from non-Chinese communities.

VANCOUVER, BC – For the first time this year, the CIBC Lunarfest collaborated with professional artists and children, and introduced Lantern Jungle. The CIBC Lunarfest is considered one of the top 10 Cultural Olympiad events in Vancouver.

THE IMJIN CLASSIC 2013

OTTAWA, ON -  The “Imjin Classic 2013” was a special hockey game played on the Rideau Canal to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and the Imjin River Cup. The Imjin Classic was in honour of Canadian soldiers who played Canada’s favourite winter sport on the frozen Imjin River during the Korean War.

BRAIN CANADA MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH TRAINING AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENT

VANCOUVER, BC – Senator Martin attended the Brain Canada Mental Health Research Training Awards Announcement on February 8th, 2013. Through the Canada Brain Research Fund, the Government of Canada has committed to contribute $100 million to Brain Canada over the next five years. The Training Awards will provide mentorship and training to Canadian mental health researchers.

ICE SCULPTURE ILLUMINATION CEREMONY DURING WINTERLUDE 2013

OTTAWA, ON - Senator Yonah Martin, on behalf of Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs honoured Canadian Veterans who served during the Korean War by illuminating a special ice sculpture. This special event commemorated 2013 as the Year of the Korean War Veteran.

Senator Yonah Martin expressed her utmost gratitude and appreciation to those who served during the Korean War. She spoke to guests that the sculpture serves to honour the achievements of Korean War Veterans.

OTTAWA, ON - The student ambassadors and teachers from W.J. Mouat Secondary School visited Senator Martin’s office on February 5th, 2013. Before Senator Martin was appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, she taught English and Drama at W. J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford, BC for fourteen years.

CBC HUMAN LIBRARY AT SURREY CITY CENTRE LIBRARY

SURREY, BC – The Human Library Project is an international organization that promotes dialogue and challenges prejudice. On National Human Library Day (January 26th), library visitors in 15 cities across Canada interacted with a variety of human books and had opportunities to chat one-on-one with them. 

In partnership with CBC Vancouver, local libraries in Surrey asked many volunteers to act as human books. Senator Martin volunteered and shared her inspirational stories at the City Centre Library in Surrey.

SURREY, BC – Senator Martin attended the 10th anniversary celebration of the Hua Xia Multicultural Society. This event was held at the Fleetwood Community Centre on January 26th, 2013. VANCOUVER, BC – Senator Martin attended the 3rd Annual Sage Foundation Awards Ceremony that was held at the Georgian Court Hotel in Vancouver. The SAGE Foundation was established as a non-profit organization in 2007. This SAGE’s Awards ceremony is annually held to recognize volunteers and leaders who demonstrated outstanding commitments to local communities in British Columbia.
