CHRISTMAS VISIT TO THE PERLEY RIDEAU VETERANS' HEALTH CENTRE

OTTAWA, ON - Senator Martin attended Christmas celebrations at the Perley Rideau Vieterans' Health Centre. There she also congratulated Korea War veterans recently honoured with the Ambassador of Peace Medal. The medals were issued from the Government of the Republic of Korea. Senator Martin also enjoyed some festive cheer singing Christmas carols with the veterans.

PRIME MINISTER'S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CEREMONY

COQUITLAM, BC - Senator Martin brought greetings on behalf of the Senate of Canada during the Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Early Childhood Education Ceremony. Jai Kyung Lee, the owner of Kids Village Preschool, a bilingual Korean-English childcare centre in Coquitlam was recognized for her commitment to helping a new generation of children learn foundational skills so that they may grow and become the leaders of tomorrow.

BURNABY, BC - Senator Martin attended the 20th Annual Sun Hang Do Championships hosted in the BCIT auditorium. There she witnessed an impressive display of precision, strength, and dedication as the athletes competed. The Surrey team won the team challenge and the coveted trophy.

VANCOUVER, BC - Senator Martin brought greetings on behalf of the Senate of Canada to the Nesika Awards. The Nesika Awards celebrates BC's cultural diversity. KOREA WAR VETERANS TRAVELLED FROM VANCOUVER, BC TO OTTAWA TO ATTEND THE TURN TOWARD BUSAN REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY

VANCOUVER, BC - Senator Martin bid safe travels to our true heros, the Korea War Veterans. These veterans boarded a flight in Vancouver, BC to fly across Canada and attend the Turn Toward Busan Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa. The Turn Toward Busan event will be held on November 10th to coincide with the mirroring Remembrance Day Ceremony in Korea (their November 11th).

OPENING OF THE RHODA KAELLIS RESIDENCE

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC - Senator Martin brought greetings on behalf of the Senate of Canada at the official opening of Rhoda Kaellis Residences (formerly the Garfield Hotel). This new development in New Westminster provides a total of 24 units of supportive housing for men and women with a history of homelessness, mental health issues and substance abuse, including 11 transitional units and 13 units of permanent independent housing.

VANCOUVER, BC - Senator Martin joined the Vietnamese Canadian community to celebrate the establishment of Little Saigon. This celebration was an historic event commemorating the designation of the Kingsway area as a distinct cultural neighbourhood. It was a lively celebration with leaders from many ethnic communities coming together.

CANADA KOREA INTER-PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP

OTTAWA, ON - Senator Yonah Martin welcomed the new executive team to the Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group. After many years serving as Co-Chair Barry Devolin stepped down and the CKIFG welcomed new co-chair Joe Daniel. Parliamentarians welcomed Ambassador Nam, his wife, and many Korean-Canadian business men to the reception. All enjoyed delectable Korean cuisine generously sponsored by the Korean Embassy.

VANCOUVER ZION MISSION CHOIR-2011 BENEFIT CONCERT

RICHMOND, BC - Senator Martin enjoyed beautiful melodies of the Zion Mission Choir's Benefit Concert. Senator Martin gave a special acknowledgement to Dr. Peter Chung and Mrs. Stephanie Chung for their missionary work including their work in Tanzania. Senator Martin was touched how both were inspired by the hardships observed which moved them to action and fundraise for water wells. Proceeds of the event were dedicated to this cause.

LAST HURRAH - WINNIPEG

WINNIPEG, MN - Senator Martin attended the "Last Hurrah." The Korean Veterans Association of Canada hosted this special evening in honour of Korean war veterans.  Throughout the night many veterans shared their stories and contributed to the Memory Project. Senator Martin is an honourary patron of the Memory Project, an initiative launched by the Historica Dominion Institute to capture stories of Korean war veterans.

WALKATHON FOR JAPAN RELIEF CHEQUE PRESENTATION

Senator Martin attended the cheque presentation for the fundraising efforts from the Walkathon for Japan Relief Efforts. Special thanks to the Korean Society of BC and Scotia Bank for their support. In total, cheque of $12,077.69 was donated to the Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan.

WALKATHON FOR JAPAN RELIEF -MAY 7, 2011

Senator Martin co-chaired the Walkathon with Minister for Social Development - Province of British Columbia. The event was joint event withKorean Society of BC for Fraternity and Culture with the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society. Over 400 people braved a rainy and soggy day to raise over $12,000 for Japanese earthquake relief.

COQUITLAM, BC - Senator Martin, a supporter of the arts, enjoyed the beautiful performances of the Vancouver Korean Dance Society. Artistic director and choreographer Vivian Chung along with her dancers demonstrated the phenomenal history and grace of traditional Korean dance during the program.

BATTLE OF KAPYONG REVISIT

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - The Kapyong battle was a turning point in the Korean War and led to the success of reclaiming what is now South Korea. Canadians played a pivitol role in this battle. In April of this year Senator Martin travelled with 18 Kapyong veterans to South Korea. For many of the veterans this trip was their first time back to Korea since the war almost 60 years ago. During the visit, veterans attended a memorial for the Battle of Kapyong in the city of Kapyong.

60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF KAPYONG

OTTAWA, ON - The 60th Anniversary of the Kapyong Battle was commemorated in Ottawa. Many attended this ceremony including Veterans, representitives from the Canadian Government, represenatives from the Republic of Korea, the Canadian Forces, and members from the Korean-Canadian Community.

THE ROLLING RAMPAGE ON THE HILL

Senator Martin participated in the 6th Annual Rolling Rampage on the Hill. The Rolling Rampage is an opportunity for members of the physically challenged and able bodied communities to come together and show support for Canada's community of people with disabilities. Members of Parliament, Senators, Ministers, Charitable organizations, executives from corporations and over 2,000 children from the Ottawa-Hull area all partook in the activities. The funds raised were donated in support of Canadian Paralympians and the hundreds of athletes with disabilities.

CANADA'S ECONOMIC ACTION PLAN INVESTMENTS

As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada introduced the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, a $2-billion economic stimulus measure to maintain and improve research and training facilities at Canadian universities, colleges and CEGEPs. The program is providing economic stimulus, creating jobs and generating the advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canadian institutions at the forefront of scientific advancement and ensure economic growth in the future.

AWARDING OF THE FIRST ANNUAL JOHN DIEFENBAKER AWARD

This award was named after the former Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister and defender of human rights John Diefenbaker. The Diefenbaker Award honours individuals or groups who show incredible courage and leadership in defending human rights and freedom.

The award was presented to Rev. Benjamin H. Yoon representing the Citizens’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights and Asma Jahangir of Pakistan. Senator Martin was in attendence at the ceremony.

LAUNCH OF THE CANADA KOREA FOUNDATION

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Senator Yonah Martin attended the launch of the Canada Korea Foundation (CKF). Senator Martin played a significant role in the creation of this foundation. CKF was created for the purpose of fostering stronger bilateral relations between Canada and the Republic of Korea. The event was attended by many distingushed guests including Korean war veterans and leaders within the Korean-Canadian community.
