Knowing that the present is built on the foundations of the past, Senator Martin knows that she would not be here today had it not been for the sacrifices of Canadians and others during the Korean War. Her commitment to the veterans is, therefore, unwavering. In April 2010, Senator Martin introduced a Private Member’s Motion to acknowledge and endorse July 27th annually as National Korean War Veterans Day. Then on June 8th, it passed unanimously in the Senate Chamber.
On July 27, 2011, on National Korean War Veterans Day (to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice), the Right Honourable Steven Harper attended the annual ceremony held at the Korea Veterans Wall of Remembrance in the Meadowvale Cemetery. He reiterated the importance of the Korean War in Canada’s history stating, “As we commemorate one of Canada’s most significant armed engagements of the 20th Century, we also affirm that Canada will continue to stand fearlessly with its allies when the cause is just."
